Back in 2007, I was laughed at by a publicist when I said I liked this new website called Facebook for business marketing. That “expert” said, “Facebook? That’s for teenagers. Myspace is the place to be!”

You may be wondering, “What is Myspace?” It’s hard to believe, but MySpace was the cat’s meow of social media platforms in 2007.

But I followed my gut, and by the end of 2008 (my first year in real estate sales), my business had grown so much from Facebook that I had to build a team to keep up with the leads—and that was during the Great Recession. And as we all know, Facebook has dominated social media for the last 10 years.

Likewise, today, there is another new trend on the horizon: iBuyers (the “i” stands for instant, not internet). I see the same thing happening now as I did with social media. But what I’ve learned with business trends is you can either be an early adopter and make the tool fit your business needs, or a laggard who’s “late to the party” and then held captive to a system that’s already set up.

During a recent workshop I held on this topic, I asked the audience how the term “iBuyers” makes them feel.  Here’s what they said:
  • Anxious
  • Threaten (threat to my commission)
  • Uncomfortable
  • Unsure

If we buck against this trend out of fear, we as sales agents are most certainly going to be excluded as it develops. Remember, how Blackberry responded to the advent of iPhones?  The company assumed that the public would not pay for them or want the apps. They missed the trend.

I believe real estate professionals can and must embrace breakthroughs in the real estate space that serve the public, because ultimately, that’s what our role as agents entails. Hear me: Our role will remain relevant as we focus on serving the needs of our clients.

Right now—at the beginning of the iBuyer trend—is the best time for us to adapt in a savvy way that keeps us front and center in the real estate transaction. Check out my video for more on this timely discussion and my four key tips for getting in front of the iBuyer model and remaining relevant. Yes, this model can actually contribute to your business growth.
